Bouncing Back After the Stroke

Andrew always has a notebook in his pocket to draw things he sees, to capture thoughts or ideas for development at a later date or just to enjoy the process of putting pen, pencil, crayon or pastel to paper.

During 2014 Andrew had spent many hours doing excercise training with ARNI who provided him with specialist rehabilitation and exercise support after his hospital and community physiotherapy finished.  The regular vigorous exercise regime Andrew maintained started to produce results and slowly but surly he got back some of the movement he had lost.  This positive change was a small bounce back towards greater movement and Andrew recorded this in his sketch book.

The yellow line signified a brighter future whilst the blue represented the sky and the sense of new possibilities. The trajectory of the lines go up and down which acknowledge that this is just the start of the journey of recovery.  Andrew was very aware that good and bad days lay ahead but at least there was a future and it was there for him to grasp and take forward when it could so easily have gone the other way.

Later in the winter of 2014 Andrew continued to improve and to celebrate and record this achievement, 23 months after his stroke on the 8th January 2013, he decided to paint Bounce which was 100cm x 100cm.

The bright yellow represents the positive future ahead and the multiple strokes of blue suggest the range of new possibilities had increased even more.  A development on from the original sketch is the sense of renewal and a fresh start conveyed by the use of green and yellow shapes or impressions of  spring flowers bursting into life up the left side of the painting whilst new shoots of grass are placed along the bottom of the picture
